re/Framed

This project is part of an exploration of found footage.  It grew out of my work as a documentary filmmaker.  In search of new ways to make films, I discovered the world of 16mm found footage and have subsequently become captivated by the medium itself.  Unlike video, the tactile nature of the film allows for manipulation and use beyond its original purpose.  The merging of frames from these often mundane sources, like discarded homes movies and educational films, generates a compelling interplay.  When illuminated and scanned, the resulting cinematic stills suggest a complete scene in one image.  Similar to film editing, the juxtaposition of media from different sources creates an entirely new narrative.
